Passion: Mechanical Engineering

Geneviève Desjardins, Monday, June 11, 2018

With less than a year to go to finish his degree in Mechanical Engineering at the École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS), Christopher Morin is already on his 4th internship at Premier Tech. This is what you call dedication! He is so passionate about mechanics that he is currently the captain of the Hercules Steel Bridge club at ÉTS. Recently, he and his team had the opportunity to shine at a national competition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Of the 42 teams competing, including participants from China, Mexico, the United States, they succeeded in earning a spot on the 3rd step of the podium, with a time of just 1 minute 55 seconds behind the first and second place teams from Louisiana and California. Wow! "The results between the first 3 teams were very close, but it just wasn’t enough," he says. For Christopher and his team-mates, it's still a great accomplishment, considering the 250 or so teams who had tried their luck during the year at regional competitions. They can be very proud of themselves!

However, it was not without effort that his team was able to achieve such a strong performance. Work began in September with different phases of design, manufacturing, development, and a lot of practice of assembly were then needed throughout the year: a major challenge was ahead of them.

The dedication to this long-term project earned Christopher and his team 3rd place, which is quite impressive! Next fall, Christopher will begin his last academic year, and thus his last year in this club that allows him to cultivate and implement his passion for mechanics and leadership.

To top it all off, he has the chance to be a Mechanical engineering Intern at Premier Tech for a fourth summer in a row. "Sometimes, my friends say to me: 'Are you still going back to Rivière-du-Loup this summer to that small company?' And I tell them that on the contrary, Premier Tech is in 26 countries with 4,500 team members! In an international company, I can work on large scale projects. Plus, I'm not someone who really likes aeronautics or aerospace, I prefer working on large structures with mechanics, so for me, Premier Tech is perfect," he continues. There is no doubt he is in the right place!

In a year from now, Christopher will be finishing his studies and he thinks he will return to settle in the area. Who knows, maybe he’ll be back at Premier Tech as a full-time team member!
